Holga @ Woodies on the Wharf
Jen, Clive and I went to Woodies on the Wharf a few weeks ago so I brought my Holga. Haven't been shooting enough with it really. It was a great day as you can see. The show is not that large but there are some great cars. Perfect outing for the little guy in between eating and sleeping. I think I have a few more pics on another roll from this day still to be developed.

Indy's 1941 Ford Pickup
Maybe I'll write a full story about what Lance and I have been through with this truck sometime. It should be told. Long story short, it went on the 30th Tour, made it about halfway though when it started having various issues with the air bags and leaking oil and tranny fluid. Eventually it went down for the count in Quakerville, OH (yes, that's a real town). That's when the nightmare of getting it back to California started. When it showed up in Ramona at Doomey's the guy opened the trailer up to find it smashed, all four corners, front, back and sides. He hadn't tied it down properly. Insurance battles and many thousands of dollars later, its back and better than ever and slated to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Lee hooked me with some super 8 that Navarrette shot so I edited this little short. Anyone want to buy a piece of skateboard history?

Montrose, Colorado
I shot these two photos by my parents house in Montrose, Colorado. It was a sunny, cold winter day. The images were taken looking south toward Red Mountain Pass.
I decided to merge them to get a better take of the setting. I think it turned out pretty cool.

Seabright Cannery
We spend a lot of our lives working and since I also spend a lot of time with a camera in my hand I end up with a lot of photos around work.
My place of work is at an old fruit cannery in Santa Cruz which is now owned by Richard Novak and houses NHS and other businesses like a climbing gym, 2 bakeries, and 2 bike companies. Richard purchased the property in 1989 after the cannery stopped operations. Here's an old photo from 1947>
I'm getting ready to show some images in Jai Tanju's Emulsion Stew show on August 15th and was going through photos to print. So I thought I would compile a set of Cannery images that I've taken with various cameras over the years. There are other photos in and around the cannery from events and such but these are the random ones, taken at the spur of the moment of people, machinery, and the cannery itself. Enjoy if you care to...

Holga Fisheye set
Jen got me a Holga Fisheye a while back and I took a roll of Portra 160 and did a set in the art department of everyone working at their desk to experiment. I cropped them into circles and they have a really cool effect.

Clive in the laundry
Making your kid happy when he is sick is top priority. Last week when Clive had yellow snot coming out of his nose and a fever, this pile of clean whites came in handy for 5 minutes or so of happiness.

Children's Museum
Got a roll back from the Children's museum. Clive has since gotten a crazy virus. Gee I wonder where he got it? Regardless we had a great time, did a lot of walking around too. We ate there which was a mistake because the line was so long. All in all the museum is awesome, this is just a very small part of it. Click here for the full size slide show.
Mikey Curtis
Apparently this camera needs servicing but I really like the effect that I got on this day, a lot of light coming in the lens; has a vintage look to it for sure.
Sweet style on this f/s ollie by Mikey, one of the rippers coming out of the Santa Cruz skate scene right now.

While we're waiting
So last week was Jen's spring break. We took a nice trip on Friday over the hill to San Jose with Clive and visited the Discovery Children's museum. Jen has some digi shots on her Flickr including this one:
I have to wait for my film to come back. I shot with my new AE-1 Program and 800 Kodak UC film. It does remind me however of our last educational excursion which was to Longs Marine Lab with Clive and Jen's mom. I shot expired film that turned out mostly muddy but had a couple of gems like these:
Had some winding issues with the expired film so the scans came back screwed up; but there were some cool mistakes like these 2 which I combined into one.
Go Skateboarding Day is coming up on June 21st. Should be another fun 2 day road trip with the boys. Last year we had a blast hitting 5 parks and even this pool not too far from Ripon skatepark.

Demo Days...
The tri-fecta of Santa Cruz Skateboards, Santa Cruz Boardroom, and Santa Cruz Scion triangulated a skateboard demonstration on Saturday. It was a good time had by all. It was sort of my first time trying to shoot skateboard photos with a fully manual SLR. I used my Canon Rebel with Speedlite 300TL, the NHS 15mm / 2.8 fisheye and my A-1 with my 28mm lens and speedlite.
This is probably the best shot:

Flickr Interestingness slideshow
I uploaded my first photos to Flickr in January of 2008 and its been a over a year now that I've enjoyed the benefits of having a Pro account. I have to say that more than any other internet "fad" (for lack of a better word) I truly enjoy this service and can see myself using it "forever". I could not say that for AOL in 1994, Friendster in 2001, MySpace in 2006, and even Facebook in 2008. Of course these are all "social networking" sites. Yup, even AOL (especially at the time) is / was a social networking site.
Anyway, Flickr is (to me at least) not a social networking site. Sure, it has social networking features (contacts, comments, favs, profile, groups, etc.) and people use it as such. Hey its even got porn. But to me it is purely a venue to explore (pun intended), enjoy, and further my photography and I am sure that it has essentially done that in the past year. In addition to that it has allowed my wife and I to extensively share our experience of having our first child, Clive with our family and friends. That is a considerable mark towards Flickr's social networking statue. Touche!
Flickr has a section called "Explore" where a select group of people choose images that they feel are unique and feature them on this page. People like to talk about this on Flickr extensively; citing that this and that were "Explored". Usually the indication of whether your photo has been "Explored" is if your stats blow up during the course of between 1 and 7 days (the length of time it remains featured through the link on the Explore page "Interesting Bits from the last 7 days"). But there are a couple of web site that will search the database for your username. See, that's just it... these words... Explore, Interesting Bits... What is it? Well, apparently that magical "group of people" came up with something called "Interestingness". Its an algorithm somehow balancing the number of views, comments, external link, and favs a photo gets and the more of each together scores you a higher interestingness.
Wow! Why am I boring you with all of this? I actually don't know. I mean only like 2 people read this and I'm basically talking to myself. Maybe its some sort of training for a future in broadcasting?! And now, to complete my point, which was really just to show you my set of photos from the last year and a half or so that Flickr considers to have "Interestingness", well at least these photos show up on the first couple pages of my "most popular bits". Enjoy!

Aces high! I took this photo a few years back at High Speed Productions, right outside the front door. Its yet another reminder that Thrasher and Indy are the "original Aces".

I've been brushing up on my Final Cut Pro skills a lot more recently. I edited this Independent Trucks Euro 30th Anniversary tour which is currently running on StrangeNotes.com and on the Independent YouTube Channel. This is Part 1 of 9.
Filming by David Hupp.
There will also be 2 different edits in the upcoming Strange Notes DVD "Dude, Bro. Bro, Dude." coming in April.

My Dad will love this.
My dad will love this photo. Its just "his kind" of shot. He'll sit in one spot at a party or at a family get together and shoot photo after photo just to get 1 just like this. He used to tell me when I starting shooting photos that if you get 1-2 really good shots on a roll you've done a great job. I always thought that was so encouraging of him. Thanks Dad.
The only thing I think he would do a little differently is zoom in or get a little closer. I think he'll enjoy the entire set.
I shot these with my Canon A-1 using some expired Kodak Elite Chrome 200 film. I found quite a few unexposed rolls in the bottom of a box about a month ago. The camera is just what I wanted. A 70s masterpiece of adjust ability and automatic settings and incredible lenses.

Random Doodles and Scratchings by Mark Widmann
Had a great time a couple Fridays back at Mark Widmann's art show at our friend Owen's gallery. Enjoy some images:
"Not the Denver Broncos!?" -Homer Simpson
My beloved Denver Broncos were on a great run recently. No, not wins or division titles but a great off-season run. One that has continually shocked but nonetheless pleased most fans.
However, in the course of that off-season activity, they've brought on a young, first time head coach in Josh McDaniels. Generally speaking; I'm all for this decision. Shanahan did a great job and is probably one of the best coaches ever, but it was time to move on. The Broncos needed a fresh start.
Apparently we're getting a big one now. The team's star quarterback, 3rd year player Jay Cutler, probably the best draft pick since I can remember, is now distraught through an apparent attempt to trade him and get Matt Cassell from the Patriots, McDaniels' old team. Even though it didn't happen, Cutler is pissed and has asked to be traded.
Regardless of the situation, the powers that be (in this case Broncos Owner Pat Bowlen and staff) need to do something about this. What happened to the days when a coach or owner would be willing to show up at a players doorstep to "make something happen"?
And there's one thing I must say, Jay Cutler needs to stop being such an immature baby. He didn't already figure out that every player is expendable until there are rings on fingers in the NFL? You've got your contract buddy, now get to work. You're getting paid millions of dollars to play pro football for the Denver Broncos who are #3 on the list of most Super Bowl appearances at 6. This isn't a post college job that you leave for another firm because you don't like your boss.
